Shock Absorber Mounting Kit

Shock Absorber Mounting Kit consists of the following brackets:

  • 1 x 8mm Left Bottom mount plate for trailer shock absorbers. (passenger side)
  • 1 x 8mm Right Bottom mount plate for trailer shock absorbers. (drivers side)
  • 2 x 4mm Top Brackets.
  • Suit Shock absorbers with 12mm bolts.

Slotted to suit 45mm to 60mm Springs with 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch U bolts. If using 45mm springs, you may need to slice 15mm off the bottom plate to shorten this plate.

Note: When purchasing leave us a note to supply a 45mm version if that is what you require.

How long do shock absorbers last?

Important:

Locate the top bracket so that the shock absorber top hangs towards the rear of the trailer at an angle of 15%. This angle can vary a little however the greater the angle, the less effective are the shock absorbers.

The greater the angle, the less effective the shock absorber becomes.

Folks have said to me, that these shock absorbers have failed and they need replacing. Upon inspection, the outer casting was pitted with stone dints without puncturing the casting.

In this case, shock absorbers do expire once the reached end of life. The most straightforward test is to remove the shock absorber and compress then decompress the shock absorber. If there is little resistance on any compression stroke, then replace both the shock absorber.

Good idea to check the bolts as they may also need replacing. Good quality shock absorbers are supplied with replacement bolts.

In a vehicle, shock absorbers reduce the effect of travelling over rough ground, leading to improved ride quality and vehicle handling. While shock absorbers serve the purpose of limiting excessive suspension movement, their sole intended purpose is to damp spring oscillations.

Shock absorbers use valving of oil and gasses to absorb excess energy from the springs.

Spring rates are chosen by the manufacturer based on the weight of the vehicle, loaded and unloaded. Some people use shocks to modify spring rates but this is not the correct use.

Along with hysteresis in the tire itself, they dampen the energy stored in the motion of the unsprung weight up and down. Effective wheel bounce damping may require tuning shocks to an optimal resistance.
